Ashley Welter: SITC Day in the Life

Hi! My name is Ashley and I was part of Semester in the City for the Spring of 2022. Here is a quick summary of what a day in my life looked like living in Boston and being involved with my internship!

I would wake up around 7:30 to get ready and pack lunch for my internship. I would then have to catch the train at Harvard Ave around 9:00. My commute was about an hour long so I would usually bring a book to read. I would change from the Green Line to the Blue Line in Government Center Station and make my way over to my internship site, East Boston Social Centers. Once getting there, I would meet up with my wonderful mentor, Dawn, and go over what we activity we were doing that day and any other tasks that she needed me to do, like creating the calendar for next month, flyers on upcoming events or ideas on outreach to the Hispanic community (my main project).

I would help the seniors with the activity of the day, help clean up the snack and coffee station and bring supplies back to Dawn’s office. I would eat the lunch that I bought with me or head over to the Shaws across the street to grab something. I would finish up any work of the day in Dawn’s office and then make my way back home. I would bring a change of clothes with me to make a pit stop at the gym after my internship. I found a great gym called GymIt right across from the Boston University gym and about a 20 minute walk (10 minute train ride) from the Park Vale Ave apartments.

Once I would get back home, I would shower and eat dinner. If it was a Tuesday, I would hop online for the Social Innovators ToolBox class where me and my roommates would have great conversations with other classmates who did the virtual version. I would usually end the night talking with my roommates where we would make plans for that upcoming weekend, give advice about internship site issues or talk about great things that happened during the internship that day. This end of the night tradition gave me something to look forward to after a long day and always put a smile on my face, excited for what the next day would bring.
