Meredith Mashtare: SITC Life Hacks

Hi, my name is Meredith Mashtare and I did SITC Spring semester of 2022. While in the city I picked up on several life hacks I would love to share with you. While there are seemingly endless hacks I could talk about, I would like to highlight some that save the environment and in the long run save you money!

First, buy a drying rack to dry your clothes on. This not only saves energy from using the dryer, but helps you save your quarters and can add a little needed moisture to your room during the cold, dry months! I used to put a fan going on the rack and my clothes would be dry within a couple hours. If the drying rack life is not for you, I have a hack to lessen dryer time; wool dryer balls. If you put at least 2 dryer balls in with your clothes then they will dry faster and it eliminates the need for dryer sheets! I have been able to take as much as 20 minutes off of my drying time using 2 wool dryer balls. They are available online and in many stores now in the laundry section.

My last enviro-life hack will help you at work or in-person class. There are amazing ceramic tupperware containers that are microwavable and come with lids so you can take your food to work or class with you. This saves you money because you won’t have to go somewhere to buy extra food. Additionally, you can microwave your meal right in the container without worrying about leaching chemicals that are common with plastic containers! I have seen these for sale at stores ranging from TJ Maxx, to Target, and even some local small businesses.
